Jewellery worth £6 million, reported stolen by the wife of a former American ambassador, has turned up after five years in the home of a Dutch hotel maid who mistook the gems for costume jewellery.

Dawn Arnall thought her jewels had been stolen and reported the theft to police in The Hague, insurers then paid out after an investigation failed to find either the jewellery or the thief.

But the two earclips, two rings and two necklaces had been found by a maid who handed it in after spotting a black velvet bag left in the hotel lounge.
